Upcycle Your Wine Corks With These Adorable DIY Planters

For many of us, the New Year offers a fresh start, a clean slate and renewed determination to reach our goals and see those resolutions through. While there may be bumps on the road, the most important thing to remember is that we are constantly changing, growing, and blossoming along the way.

In a way, our DIY Wine Cork Planters symbolize the spirit of this growth. Made with modest succulent clippings that are perfectly sized for our Sutter Home wine corks, these little plants might be small, but they’re alive and flourishing. The greenery is a great way to liven up indoor spaces in the middle of winter, while the project itself is the perfect excuse to spend a little extra time with a family member or friend.

So grab a loved one, upcycle our corks and plant new roots for 2017.

Here’s what you’ll need:

·      Wine Corks

·      Succulent Plant Clippings

·      Power Drill with ½” Drill bit

·      Cutting tool/hobby knife

·      Small Magnets – 2 per cork

·      Super Glue, or Hot Glue Gun

·      1 small bag of Planters Soil

Here’s what to do:

1.     Place a cork vertically on a cutting mat or spare piece of wood, and drill  ½” hole in the center of the cork. Be sure to have a firm grasp on the cork, or it will spin out of your hand. It is also a good idea to drill a smaller hole first as a guide for the larger drill bit. Drill about ¾ deep into the cork. Be careful not to drill to deep. If you don’t have a drill, this can be accomplished by using a hobby knife.

2.     Use your craft knife to clean the edges of the newly drilled hole.

3.     Using the craft knife, cut a small section off of the back of the cork to create a flat surface for your magnets.

4.     With super glue, or a hot glue gun, attach two magnets to the back of the cork. For best results, place the magnets near the top and bottom of the cork to prevent the cork from tipping over. The stronger the magnets, the better it will hold.

5.     Fill your cork with planters soil about ¾ of the way.

6.     Place succulent clipping into cork with soil.
