Sutter Home Family Vineyards Announces the Finalist Recipes for 2012 Sutter Home Build a Better
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
St. Helena, Calif., January 23, 2013 – Sutter Home Family Vineyards is proud to reveal the 10 finalist recipes of the 2012 Sutter Home Build a Better Burger® Recipe Contest, the Napa Valley winery’s search for the nation’s best burger recipe. Finalists from around the country will compete for the $100,000 grand prize for the most mouth-watering beef burger, and $15,000 will go to the winning alternative burger in a cook-off at the Sutter Home Winery in St. Helena, Calif. on May 18, 2013.
For more than 20 years, the contest has collected countless delicious burger recipes from around the country, each year revealing new burger trends. The finalist recipes showcase inspiration from contestants’ every day favorite foods. From food truck menu items and football tailgating snacks to breakfast burgers and ethnic cuisine, contestants used their most-loved cuisine to inspire recipes worthy of being named as the 2012 Sutter Home Build a Better Burger winning burger.
The five finalists and highlights of their recipes in the beef category include:
7 Train Caramelized Green Curry Burger
It’s the number 7 subway train that takes Evenson to indulge in her favorite crispy watercress salad in the neighborhood of Woodside in Queens, New York. The 7 Train Caramelized Green Curry Burger is her tribute to this “culinary wonder,” with a sweet and spicy green-curry glaze, a little nugget of salty pancetta, creamy minted basil aioli, the crunch of roasted cashews, and a tangle of the watercress salad.
Suggested wine pairing: Sutter Home Gewürztraminer
Razzle Dazzle Burger
The Razzle Dazzle Burger was inspired by Nowak and her husband’s love of their local Italian and Tex-Mex restaurants. With fresh raspberry-avocado salsa, a patty with just a touch of heat from chipotle chile, and sweetness of the almost-addictive salted caramel bacon, the burger features a balance between the spicy, sweet, and savory flavors that the Nowaks love in both cuisines.
Suggested wine pairing: Sutter Home White Merlot
Kickin’ Brunch Burger
With a husband who is a huge college football fan, Pinheiro realized nothing could be more perfect than a brunch-themed burger to kick off a Saturday tailgate. The Kickin’ Brunch Burger features brunch favorite Bloody Mary in the form of sofrito, along with roasted jalapeño honey aioli’s sweet heat.
Suggested wine pairing: Sutter Home Gewürztraminer
Grilled Green Tomato Burger
The Grilled Green Tomato Burger was inspired by Pyne’s love of southern food, especially green tomatoes. His burger is filled with southern comfort ingredients, including grilled green tomatoes, garlic lemon mayonnaise, shoestring fries, and homemade BBQ sauce.
Suggested wine pairing: Sutter Home Sauvignon Blanc
Korean-Hawaiian Taco Truck Burger
Sherrill and her husband happily wait in the long lines at a popular Korean-Hawaiian taco truck in Seattle, where they indulge in kalbi or bulgogi tacos, SPAM® sliders and musubi. The Korean-Hawaiian Taco Truck Burger was inspired by these favorite menu items, including SPAM and kalbi, along with Korean ingredients such as chile paste roasted seaweed snacks.
Suggested wine pairing: Sutter Home Cabernet Sauvignon
The five finalists competing for the $15,000 prize in the alternative category include:
Better than Breakfast in Bed Burger
Jones has always loved savory breakfast food, and combined her favorites to create the Better than Breakfast in Bed Burger. The burger features juicy, seasoned pork with a spicy and sweet maple Sriracha mayo and topped with a sunny-side-up egg.
Suggested wine pairing: Sutter Home Pinot Grigio
Smoky Sweet Salmon Slider
Inspired by a memorable entree of salmon with mashed potatoes at a restaurant near Evergreen, Colo., Keithline created the Smoky Sweet Salmon Slider with flavors from that dish. The slider features a creamy dill spread, a patty made of wild-caught coho salmon, a maple glaze and crispy potato sticks.
Suggested wine pairing: Sutter Home Gewürztraminer
Lamb Burger with Mango Chutney Mayo and Minted Romaine
Lundquist loves experimenting with unique flavor combinations, and the Lamb Burger with Mango Chutney Mayo and Minted Romaine is one of her favorite concoctions. The burger features a tangy goat cheese, slightly spicy cherry peppers, crisp minted lettuce, and sweet mango.
Suggested wine pairing: Sutter Home Moscato
Lemon-Scented “Salmon-icious” Burger
After receiving a gift of fresh salmon, Mariscal began creating a variety of salmon dishes and decided to try salmon burgers. After some trial and error and many changes to the recipe, she created the Lemon-Scented “Salmon-icious” Burger, which features a zesty dill spread and a New Mexico red chile bun glaze.
Suggested wine pairing: Sutter Home White Zinfandel
Indian Lamb Burger
Richardson was inspired by his love for Indian spices and flavors to create the Indian Lamb Burger. The burger’s unique taste of lamb is accentuated with Indian spices such as cumin and coriander, along with a tahini pistachio mayonnaise.
Suggested wine pairing: Sutter Home Merlot
“For more than 20 years, the Sutter Home Build a Better Burger® Contest finalist recipes have amazed us with their originality and flavor, and this year may be the most creative yet,” says Wendy Nyberg, senior director of marketing for Sutter Home. “Sutter Home is passionate about pairing our wines with burgers and we think these finalist recipes will be perfect for the next backyard BBQ, or even inspire a new tradition of hosting a burger contest among friends and family.”
The winning beef and alternative burgers will be selected at the May 18th cook-off by a panel of judges. Past judges have included such icons as Iron Chef Cat Cora, chef and restaurant owner Thomas Keller, and celebrity chef and restaurateur Art Smith.
