Ultimate Comfort Chili Burger

Pairs well with:

Zinfandel

Bright and full-bodied, this Zinfandel wine is a curious contradiction in tastes.

Ingredients

2 pounds ground chuck
4 tablespoons minced onion
1 teaspoon garlic powder
3 tablespoons chili powder
1 teaspoon sugar
½ cup chili beans mashed with 1 tablespoon sauce

Vegetable oil, for brushing the grill rack
6 slices cheddar cheese
12 slices Texas toast
6 tomato slices
6 tablespoons sour cream
1 ½ cups Fritos corn chips

Instructions

Prepare a medium-hot fire in a charcoal grill with a cover.

To make the patties, in a large bowl, combine ground chuck, onion, garlic powder, chili powder, sugar and beans. Handling the meat as little as possible to avoid compacting it, mix well. Shape mixture into 6 equal patties approximately 1-inch thick.

When grill is ready, brush the rack with oil. Place the patties on the rack, cover, and cook, turning once, until done to preference (5-7 minutes on each side for medium) or until internal temperature reaches at least 160 degrees F. During last 2 minutes of cooking, top each patty with a slice of cheese

Meanwhile, place toast along outer edges of rack to toast lightly. Then grill tomato slices for 1-2 minutes per side.

To assemble the burgers, top 6 slices toast with a patty, 1 tomato slice, 1 tablespoon sour cream, ¼ cup Fritos and another slice of toast. Serve.

Makes 6 burgers.
