South of the Border Burger

My husband thinks this is the best burger he has ever tasted. This is fun and easy to prepare and oh, so delicious!


Avocado Spread
1 Avocado mashed
1/2 Tomato chopped
1/3 cup mayonnaise
1/2 teaspoon lemon juce
1/2 teaspoon hot sauce
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Mayonnaise/Mustard spread
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup horseradish sauce
1 Tablespoon Grey Poupon Mustard
1 teaspoon lemon juce
1/2 teaspoon fresh thyme
1 pound ground round
1 pound ground sirloin
1/4 cup Sutter Home Pinot Grigio
1 Tablespoon chopped fresh basil
1 tespoon fresh thyme
1 Tablespoon kosher salt
1/2 tespoon freshly ground black pepper
2 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
Colavita extra virgin olive oil for brushing on burgers
6 thin slices of vadalia or sweet onion
6 leaf lettuce leaves
12 basil leaves ( 2 on each burger)


Mix the mashed avocado,chopped tomato,mayonnaise,lemon juce, tabasco sauce, salt and pepper together and set aside. Mix the mayonnaise, horseredish, mustard,lemon juce and thyme together and set aside. Prepare a charcoal grill to a medium-hot fire or prepare a gas grill to medium high. To make the patties, combine the ground round and ground sirloin. Add salt, pepper, wine, worcestershire sauce, thyme and chopped basil.Mix together and shape into 6 patties, 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. Make a small hole in the center of each patty to allow the patty to cook evenly. Chill the patties for 15 to 20 minutes before placing on the grill to keep the patties firm. Brush olive oil on each patty and grill 5 to 6 minutes on each siide turning only once. Serve on whole wheat buns that have been heated on the grill for 2 minutes. To assemble the burgers, spread the avocado mixture on the cut side of bun, Place the onion slice, patty,2 basil leaves and lettuce leaf. Spread the other cut side of bun with the mayonnaise mixture. Enclose the burger together. Enjoy!!
