This Sweet Apply Maple Burger is the greatest local burger for Vermont because it contains real maple syrup, Cabot cheddar cheese and apples. All these ingredients are part of Vermont. This burger captured all of these flavors very well. I think that everyone in Vermont would agree and everyone outside of Vermont as well. I do hope you pick my burger for its originality and flavor.

Sweet Apple Maple Burger
1 ¾ cups - large red onion - diced
1 ½ cups – Royal Gala apple – diced
4 Tablespoons fresh basil – chopped
¼ tsp of nutmeg
¼ tsp of cinnamon
5 Tablespoons of real maple syrup
2 Tablespoons of Sutter Home White Merlot
4 Tablespoons honey butter – (to make – 2 TBLS stick butter & 1 tsp of honey – mix to smooth)
3 1bs – Angus ground beef - Makes 6 1/2 pound burgers
½ teaspoon of honey butter for grilling apple slices
6 - Hamburger or kaiser rolls

For top of burger:
1 – Large Gala apple sliced to about ½ inch thick – you need 18 slices
3 – Slices of Mild Cabot cheddar cheese sliced about ¼ inch thick and cut at an angle to make a triangle shape

For Mayonnaise Spread:
1 Tablespoons of mayonnaise
1 teaspoon of spicy brown mustard
1 teaspoon of honey
2 basil leaves chopped

Sauté on medium heat: onion, apple, basil till slightly tender about 10 minute. Add: maple syrup, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cook about 5 minutes more until lightly caramelized. Add cooked mixture to Hamburg and make 6 ½ pound round burgers.

Lay down some nonstick aluminum foil on the grating. Preheat gill to 200 degree's. Put hamburgers on one side of the grill. Grill burgers for 10 minutes on one side and then turn over and grill for another 10 minutes on the other side. Then turn the hamburgers again for another 5 minutes. After 5 minutes turn the burgers over and add apple slices and cheese. Grill for about 3 minutes or until cheese is melted

While burgers are cooking:

On the other side of the grill lay down another sheet of nonstick aluminum foil. Take the slices of apple and brush them with the honey butter. Grill on each side for approximately 2-3 minutes until golden. Take apples off the grill and set aside in a bowl covered with aluminum foil to keep warm.

When burgers are done – place on roll and spread the top with the mayonnaise spread and sprinkle with chopped basil

I really hope that I get to come to Napa Valley. I have never entered a contest before but saw this contest in the Rachel Ray Magazine and just had to do it. I love burgers and wine so I thought why not.
